Scroll through Instagram or turn on Love Island, and you will see them: perfect, white, symmetrical smiles.
For many of our patients in Croydon, the desire to improve their smile is strong, but the terminology can be confusing. Two treatments often come up in conversation: Composite Bonding and Porcelain Veneers.
Both can fix chipped teeth, close gaps, and mask discolouration—but they achieve these results in very different ways. One is a quick, affordable, “add-on” treatment; the other is a permanent, premium transformation.
At Croydon Dental Practice, we offer both. Here is our honest guide to help you decide which smile makeover is right for you.
Option 1: Composite Bonding (The “Artistic” Choice)
Composite Bonding (sometimes called Cosmetic Bonding) involves applying a tooth-coloured resin material directly to your teeth.1 Your dentist then sculps, shapes, and polishes it to look like natural enamel.2
+1
The Pros:
- Non-Invasive: In most cases, we do not need to drill or remove any of your natural tooth structure.3 The material is simply bonded onto the surface.
- Fast (One Visit): You can walk in with a chipped or gapped smile and walk out with a transformation in just 60–90 minutes.
- Reversible: Because we haven’t drilled your tooth, the treatment is often reversible.4
- Affordable: Bonding is significantly cheaper than veneers, making it a great entry-level cosmetic option.
The Cons:
- Staining: Like natural teeth, the resin can stain over time from coffee, red wine, or smoking.5
- Durability: It is not as strong as porcelain.6 It can chip if you bite your nails or open packaging with your teeth.7 Expect it to last 4–7 years before needing a polish or repair.
+1
Option 2: Porcelain Veneers (The “Hollywood” Choice)
Veneers are ultra-thin, custom-made shells of ceramic (porcelain) that are bonded to the front surface of your teeth.8 Think of them like false fingernails, but for your teeth—and much stronger!
The Pros:
- Stain Resistant: Porcelain is essentially glass. It is incredibly smooth and does not stain. Your smile will stay white for years.
- Unmatched Aesthetics: Porcelain mimics the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth perfectly.9 It looks incredibly real and high-end.
- Longevity: With good care, veneers can last 10–15 years (or longer).
The Cons:
- Invasive: To stop the veneer looking bulky, we usually need to remove a tiny layer of your natural enamel (shaving the tooth slightly).10
- Permanent: Once you remove enamel, you can never “go back.” You will always need veneers on those teeth.
- Cost: Because they are hand-crafted in a dental laboratory, they cost significantly more than bonding.
- Time: It takes at least two visits (one to prepare the teeth, one to fit the veneers).

Which One is Right for You?
Choose Composite Bonding If:
- You have minor imperfections (chips, small gaps).11
- You want a result today.
- You are on a tighter budget.
- You want to keep your natural teeth untouched (no drilling).
- Great for: Younger patients or those wanting a “mini-makeover”.
Choose Veneers If:
- You want a complete, dramatic transformation (change shape, size, and colour).
- You have severe staining that whitening won’t fix.
- You want a low-maintenance smile that won’t stain.
- You are ready for a long-term investment.
- Great for: Adults wanting a permanent “perfect” smile.
Can I Whiten My Teeth First?
Yes! Whether you choose bonding or veneers, we always recommend Teeth Whitening first.
We will whiten your natural teeth to your desired shade, and then match the bonding or veneers to that new, brighter colour. (Remember: We can’t whiten bonding/veneers once they are placed, so get the colour right first!)
