Starting clear aligner treatment: what happens at your fitting

5 min video · Dr Sarah Sadek, Specialist Orthodontist (GDC No. 114943)

Opens on YouTube. The aligners shown in this video are Invisalign. AddaSmile fittings follow similar steps.

Key points

  • Your aligners are made from a digital plan of how your teeth will move, which you can usually see before treatment starts.
  • At the fitting, small tooth-coloured attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help the aligners grip and move them.
  • Each aligner is checked for fit, and you are shown how to put them in, take them out and clean them.
  • Aligners need to be worn for most of the day and night, usually 20 to 22 hours, taking them out to eat and drink anything except water.
  • New aligners often feel tight for the first few days; this is normal.

Summary

The first aligner appointment is all about getting you started confidently. In this video Dr Sarah walks through the steps, from bonding attachments to checking each aligner and showing you what comes in your box.

At Croydon we offer Invisalign and AddaSmile, a clear aligner brand. Both follow a similar process. At your free aligner consultation we check whether aligners suit your teeth and explain how treatment would work for you.

Questions about this topic

How many hours a day do I need to wear aligners?

Usually 20 to 22 hours a day, or as your orthodontist advises. Take them out to eat and to drink anything other than plain water.

Do aligners hurt?

New aligners often feel tight for a few days as teeth start to move. This usually settles quickly.

What are attachments?

Small tooth-coloured bumps bonded to some teeth so the aligners can grip and move them accurately. They are removed at the end of treatment.

What is the difference between AddaSmile and Invisalign?

Both are clear aligner systems. AddaSmile is a clear aligner brand. We can explain the differences, including price, at a free consultation.
