Why adults choose orthodontic treatment

Many adults who come to see us missed out on braces as children, or had treatment years ago and have noticed their teeth moving since. Others want to tidy up crowding before other dental work, or find that overlapping teeth are hard to keep clean. Whatever your reason, treatment starts with an honest look at your teeth, gums and bite, and a clear explanation of what is realistically achievable.

Things to consider as an adult

Gum health comes first. Adult teeth are fully set in bone, and gum disease can make moving them riskier, so we check your gums before treatment and may ask you to see a hygienist first.

Existing dental work. Crowns, bridges, implants and missing teeth all affect what is possible. Implants do not move, for example, so we plan around them.

Timescale. Adult treatment often takes a similar time to teenage treatment. You will get an estimate in your written plan.

Lifestyle. Fixed braces need extra care when cleaning and eating; aligners need you to wear them consistently. We help you pick what fits your routine.

Keeping your teeth straight afterwards

Teeth can drift throughout life, whether or not you have had braces, so retainers are an essential part of adult treatment. We may fit a thin wire bonded behind your front teeth, give you clear removable retainers to wear at night, or both. Replacement retainers are available if yours are lost or damaged. Results vary from person to person, and long-term retainer wear plays a big part in keeping yours. See real adult cases in our before & after smile transformations.

Adult braces in Croydon: common questions

Am I too old for braces?

There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. What matters is that your teeth and gums are healthy. We check this at your consultation and may suggest seeing your dentist or hygienist first if any treatment is needed.

What are the most discreet braces for adults?

Clear aligners, such as Invisalign or AddaSmile, are removable and made of clear plastic. Ceramic braces are fixed but use tooth-coloured brackets. We can show you both at your consultation.

How much do adult braces cost in Croydon?

Private treatment at our practice starts from £1,100 for metal braces, £1,499 for AddaSmile aligners, £1,850 for Invisalign and £3,200 for ceramic braces. Your exact fee is confirmed after your consultation, and 0% finance is available.

Will braces affect my work or social life?

Most adults carry on as normal. You may speak a little differently for a few days with aligners, and teeth can feel tender after adjustments or a new set of aligners. Appointments are during our opening hours, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:30.

Can I have adult braces on the NHS?

NHS orthodontic treatment is generally for under-18s, so most adults have treatment privately. Our team can explain the private options and payment plans available.
