How Invisalign aligners work

Invisalign uses a series of thin, custom-made plastic trays. Each set is shaped slightly differently from the last, applying gentle, controlled pressure that moves your teeth a small step at a time. You move on to the next set at intervals your orthodontist sets, and attend regular reviews so we can check that your teeth are tracking as planned.

Digital planning

We take a 3D scan of your teeth and use it to plan every stage of the movement, so you can see a simulation of the proposed plan before you commit.

Attachments

Small tooth-coloured bumps bonded to some teeth give the aligners something to grip, helping with movements such as rotations. They are polished off at the end.

Refinements

Teeth do not always move exactly as predicted. If needed, we take a new scan partway through or near the end and make extra aligners to fine-tune the position.

Retainers

Once your teeth are in position, retainers help hold them there. Long-term retainer wear is the key to keeping your smile straight.

Living with clear aligners

Because aligners come out, you can eat what you like and brush and floss as normal. The trade-off is discipline: they only work while they are in your mouth, so you will need to wear them for around 22 hours a day and put them straight back in after meals. Many people find new aligners feel tight for a day or two as the teeth start to move.

Aligners suit many adults and suitable teenagers with crowding, spacing and some bite problems. More complex cases may be better treated with fixed braces, and we will tell you if that applies to you. Results vary from person to person. Both use clear removable trays and both are planned and supervised by our orthodontic team, led by Dr Sarah Sadek, Specialist Orthodontist. At your free consultation we explain how the two differ in price and what is included, so you can decide which suits your teeth, budget and preferences.

Invisalign in Croydon: your questions

How much does Invisalign cost in Croydon?

Invisalign treatment at our practice starts from £1,850. AddaSmile, a clear aligner brand, starts from £1,499. Your exact fee depends on how much your teeth need to move and is confirmed after your free consultation. 0% finance is available.

How many hours a day do I need to wear Invisalign aligners?

Around 22 hours a day. You take them out to eat, drink anything other than plain water, and clean your teeth. Wearing them for less time than advised can slow progress.

Will people notice my aligners?

Aligners are made of clear plastic, so most people find them discreet in day-to-day life. Small tooth-coloured attachments may be visible close up.

Am I suitable for Invisalign?

Many adults and teenagers with crowding, gaps or some bite problems are suitable. Some cases are better treated with fixed braces. We will tell you honestly at your consultation which options suit your teeth.

Do I need a retainer after Invisalign?

Yes. Teeth naturally tend to move back after any orthodontic treatment, so retainers are needed to help keep them in their new position. We explain how and when to wear them before your treatment ends.
