An overview before you start

Implant treatment is not a single appointment. It happens in stages over a few months, and most of that time is quiet healing at home. Knowing the order of things makes it far easier to plan family commitments, childcare or lifts for an older relative, and it means you always know what the next visit is for.

A typical implant timeline. Healing between placing the implant and fitting the final tooth usually takes a few months, with a temporary tooth if one is needed. Illustration only.

Each visit, explained

  1. Your consultation (£75)
We start by listening: which tooth is missing, how it affects eating or smiling, and what matters most to you. Dr Anti checks your teeth and gums and explains implants, bridges and dentures side by side. You are welcome to bring a family member along. The fee is deducted if you go ahead.
  2. Scan and planning
A 3D CBCT scan lets us see the bone in detail, so the implant can be planned carefully in advance. It also tells us early on whether more bone is needed. You then receive a written, itemised quote to take home and think over.
  3. Placing the implant
Local anaesthetic numbs the area fully, and the implant, a small titanium post with a screw-like thread, is placed into the jawbone. We explain what is happening throughout and you can ask us to pause at any time. Sedation is not offered at our practice.
  4. Healing time
The bone gradually grows around the implant over usually a few months. We see you for a short check in the meantime. If the gap would show, we can discuss a temporary tooth so you can carry on with family photos and school runs without worrying.
  5. Fitting your new tooth
When the implant is secure, a crown, bridge or denture is made and shaded to blend with your own teeth. We fit it, check your bite and show you how to keep it clean.
  6. Looking after it
Regular check-ups and hygiene appointments help keep the gum and bone around your implant healthy for the long term.

Your recovery checklist

Feeling a little sore, swollen or bruised for a few days after the implant is placed is normal. This checklist covers the things people most often ask about.

Do Avoid
Hold a cold pack against your cheek on and off for the first few hours Hot drinks and food until the numbness has worn off
Choose soft foods such as soup, pasta, eggs and yoghurt for a few days Chewing hard or crunchy food on the implant side
Take everyday painkillers if needed, following the packet Rinsing hard or poking the area with your tongue
Brush your other teeth normally and use gentle salt-water rinses as advised Smoking and alcohol, which can slow healing
Rest for the remainder of the day Heavy exercise or lifting for a couple of days

If bleeding will not settle, swelling gets worse after a few days, or you feel unwell, please call us on 020 8656 6959.

Questions families ask us about time off

Will I need time off work?

Most people return to work the next day. If your job involves heavy lifting, a day or two off can be more comfortable.

Can I drive myself home?

Because only local anaesthetic is used, most people can travel home independently. Some like company for the journey, and that is fine too.

What if my parent is having treatment?

It can help to stay with them for the rest of the day, prepare a few soft meals and keep painkillers handy. We are happy to talk through any medicines they take beforehand.

What if I look after small children?

Most people manage normally after the first day. Having another adult around on the afternoon of placement can make things easier.

Why some journeys take longer

Removing a tooth first

A failing tooth may need a tooth extraction and a period of healing before the implant is placed.

Building up bone

If extra bone is needed, we explain the options, which may include grafting, and include it in your written quote.

Health factors

Smoking, diabetes and gum disease can affect healing and suitability. We look at each of these with you individually.

Larger treatments

Implant-retained dentures and All-on-4 follow similar stages, planned together.

Implant timeline: common questions

How long will the whole thing take?

Usually a few months from consultation to the final tooth, mainly to give the implant time to bond with the bone. Your plan sets out the expected stages for you.

Do I need a new patient examination first?

If you are new to us, you may be advised to have a new patient examination with X-rays (£65) so we have a full picture of your oral health. Our team will tell you when you book.

Is it uncomfortable having the implant placed?

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure rather than pain during the procedure. Afterwards, everyday painkillers usually manage any soreness. We do not offer sedation.

Can I get implants on the NHS?

Implants are very rarely available on the NHS. As an NHS practice too, we can talk you through NHS alternatives such as bridges and dentures.

Can we spread the cost?

Finance through Tabeo, including 0% interest for up to 12 months on selected private treatments, is available subject to status. See our implant cost guide.
