What veneers can help with

Veneers are a cosmetic treatment for front teeth. They can help with chipped or worn edges, small gaps, teeth that are slightly uneven in shape or length, and discolouration that does not respond to whitening. They are not a fix for decay, gum disease or significantly crooked teeth, which need treating in other ways first.

Composite or porcelain?

Composite veneers and bonding

Tooth-coloured resin is added to the tooth and sculpted by hand, usually in a single visit. Little or no enamel needs to be removed, and they are easy to repair or add to. Composite can stain and chip more readily than porcelain and usually needs polishing or touching up over the years. Find out more about composite bonding in Croydon.

From £180 per tooth

Porcelain veneers

Thin ceramic shells made by a dental laboratory and bonded to the teeth. Porcelain resists staining and holds its polish well. A thin layer of enamel normally has to be removed so the veneer does not look bulky, which cannot be undone, and they take at least two visits. If one breaks it usually has to be replaced rather than repaired.

Priced after consultation

Your dentist will explain which option suits your teeth, bite and goals. For many people, composite is a sensible first step because it keeps more of the natural tooth.

Consider whitening and straightening first

Veneers and bonding do not change colour with whitening. If you would like your teeth lighter overall, it usually makes sense to whiten your teeth first, from £350, and then match any veneers or bonding to the new shade. Whitening alone is sometimes all that is needed.

If teeth are crowded, rotated or spaced, straightening them with clear aligners or orthodontics can mean little or no tooth needs to be altered, or allow thinner veneers. As a practice with an in-house orthodontic team, Addiscombe Orthodontics, we can talk you through both approaches.

What happens at each appointment

  1. Consultation
We discuss what you would like to change, examine your teeth and gums, check your bite and take photographs if helpful. Any decay or gum problems are treated first.
  2. Planning
You receive a written plan and quote. For porcelain, a mock-up or wax model may be used so you can preview the proposed shape.
  3. Composite: one visit
The tooth surface is cleaned and lightly roughened, then resin is applied in layers, shaped, set with a light and polished. Usually no anaesthetic is needed.
  4. Porcelain: preparation
A thin layer of enamel is removed, usually under local anaesthetic, impressions are taken and temporary coverings may be placed.
  5. Porcelain: fitting
A couple of weeks later the veneers are tried in, checked for fit and shade, bonded in place and the bite adjusted.

Risks and things to consider

Veneers can look natural, but results depend on your starting point, the shape of your teeth and your bite, and we cannot promise a particular outcome. Teeth may feel sensitive for a short time after porcelain veneers are fitted. Veneers can chip or come off, especially if you grind your teeth, bite your nails or use your teeth to open things. Composite may discolour over time, particularly with tea, coffee, red wine or smoking.

Because porcelain veneers involve removing enamel, they are a lifelong commitment: they will eventually need replacing, and the tooth underneath cannot go back to how it was. We will always discuss less invasive options, and we will tell you if we think veneers are not right for you.

Looking after veneers

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste using a soft or medium brush, and clean between your teeth daily; veneers do not stop the tooth underneath from decaying at the edges. Keep up regular check-ups and hygiene visits, and ask for a polish of composite work when needed. Avoid biting hard objects with your front teeth, and if you grind, a night guard can help protect your veneers. If you play contact sport, wear a sports mouthguard.

Call us on 020 8656 6959 if a veneer chips, feels loose or comes off. Keep any piece that comes away and bring it with you.

Veneers: common questions

How much do veneers cost in Croydon?

Composite bonding and composite veneers start from £180 per tooth. Porcelain veneers are priced after a consultation because the cost depends on the number of teeth and the work involved. You receive a written quote first.

Should I whiten my teeth before veneers?

Often, yes. Veneers and bonding do not respond to whitening, so if you want lighter teeth it is usually sensible to whiten first, from £350, and match the veneers to your new shade.

Do veneers damage your teeth?

Composite usually needs little or no enamel removed. Porcelain veneers normally require a thin layer of enamel to be removed, which cannot be reversed, so the teeth will always need some form of covering.

How long do veneers last?

It varies with the material, your bite and how you look after them. Composite usually needs maintenance and touch-ups over the years, and porcelain veneers will eventually need replacing.

Can I get veneers on the NHS?

No. Veneers for cosmetic reasons are not available on the NHS. If a front tooth is broken or decayed, your dentist can explain NHS options to repair it.

Is it uncomfortable to have veneers fitted?

Composite bonding often needs no anaesthetic. For porcelain veneers the teeth are usually numbed with local anaesthetic during preparation. Some people have short-lived sensitivity afterwards.
